A Return Voyage from Europe to the Americas
The Tulsa Symphony Orchestra
Daniel Hege, conductor
Anne-Marie McDermott, piano
The Overture to La clemenza di Tito (The Clemency of Titus) begins our finale. Rarely heard, it is now being reconsidered as a work of restraint, warmth and nobility. Next the orchestra shares Mendelssohn’ s Symphony No. 5 in D, called the Reformation Symphony, which honors the 300th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession and includes a hymn tune. For OK Mozart, Mendelssohn’s symphony is a reminder that this year’s festival has experienced a sort of re-formation. Our voyage back to the Americas takes us first to Mexico where symphonic dance is alive with Arturo Marquez’s Danzon No.2 for Orchestra. The work debuted in 1994 and remains one of the most frequently performed works for orchestra. Our final destination is New York where we pay tribute to our first 31 years of festivals with a return appearance by Anne-Marie McDermott playing Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.
