A Musical Voyage from the Americas to Europe – A World of Brilliant Sound

The Signature Symphony

Andrés Franco, conductor

and OK Mozart College All-State Orchestra

Andrés Franco and the Signature Symphony take us on a journey through 100 years of symphonic dance music, beginning in Peru with three short pieces based on the Colección de música virreinal of 1783. We then journey across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe for Mozart’s Six German Dances of 1787 and Johann Strauss’s Overture to the Gypsy Baron written in 1885.   The program ends with Brahms Symphony No. 4, also written in 1885, which hints at dance with whimsical romantic harmonies and cross rhythms. The final movement is a chaconne - introduced from the Americas as a quick dance. By the early eighteenth century, the chaconne had evolved into a slow triple meter.

Classical Gold - Visionary Masterpieces

The Tulsa Symphony Orchestra

Daniel Hege, conductor

David Carter, clarinet

The works on this program literally shaped the future of music. Consider Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A that was written in 1791, just before his death. It is the height of his compositional innovation –   a concerto with no cadenzas. Consider too Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 in F Major written in 1808, also known as the Pastoral Symphony. Among the first programmatic works written, each movement has a descriptive subtitle about his favorite countryside. Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, possibly one of the first pieces written with political overtones, deals with the Dutch struggle for liberty against the imperial rule of Spain. There’s a reason we are calling this concert Classical Gold.

A Return Voyage from Europe to the Americas

The Tulsa Symphony Orchestra

Daniel Hege, conductor

Anne-Marie McDermott, piano

The Overture to La clemenza di Tito (The Clemency of Titus) begins our finale. Rarely heard, it is now being reconsidered as a work of restraint, warmth and nobility. Next the orchestra shares Mendelssohn’ s Symphony No. 5 in D, called the Reformation Symphony, which honors the 300th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession and includes a hymn tune. For OK Mozart, Mendelssohn’s symphony is a reminder that this year’s festival has experienced a sort of re-formation.  Our voyage back to the Americas takes us first to Mexico where symphonic dance is alive with Arturo Marquez’s Danzon No.2 for Orchestra. The work debuted in 1994 and remains one of the most frequently performed works for orchestra. Our final destination is New York where we pay tribute to our first 31 years of festivals with a return appearance by Anne-Marie McDermott playing Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.
