Beethoven's music affected almost every composer who came after him. In this program, the OU Symphony Orchestra features his visionary Fourth Symphony, whose mysteries and vivacity foreshadow the remarkably arresting Lontano of Gyorgy Ligeti (familiar to all who have seen Stanley Kubrick's film The Shining) and the incredible Concerto for Orchestra of Bela Bartok, one of the greatest orchestral works since Beethoven's own symphonies. Hearing Beethoven's music played by the gifted students of the OU Symphony adds another dimension to the future that Beethoven continues to affect to this day.
Led by Dr. Jonathan Shames, Professor of Orchestral Conducting and OU Opera Theater Artistic Director, the OU Symphony Orchestra is one of the most exciting collegiate ensembles in American universities today. The orchestra has gained attention for its sell-out performance in Dallas’ Morton H. Meyerson Center, as well as for hosting the 4x4 Prizes for Composers and Conductors. The ensemble performs regularly at the University of Oklahoma, playing a wide repertoire of orchestral and opera music. Highlights of the past three seasons have included performances of Brahms “Symphony No. 4,” Strauss’ “Four Last Songs” with alumnus Julie Davies, Beethoven’s “Pastoral Symphony,” Rachmaninoff’s “Symphonic Dances,” Debussy’s “Nocturnes,” Bartok’s “Dance Suite,” symphonies of Schumann, Schubert, and Nielsen, Stravinsky’s “Symphony in Three Movements,” Petrushka and Firebird, and staged performances of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker.
